Sketching at Little India

The weather man said it was 36 deg Celsius today and our group was out in full force sketching in Little India under the scotching hot and humid weather. This corner shophouse selling vegetables and frutis of Dunlop Street and Clive Street is the most painted building by artisits and sketchers. The big and small trucks are always blocking our view while we sketch.

Arya Samaj Temple seen from Birch Road

Unique yellow dome caught my attention from Birch Road in Little India. It is the Arya Samaj Temple at 113 Sye Alwi Road. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arya_Samaj_in_Singapore

Sketching in Little India

Together with students from Singapore University of Technology and Design, we explored Robert Lane in Little India for the unique shophouses there with bay windows. It rained suddenly so I had to stop and changed strategy to just add colour washes without adding details.

Result of last Sketchwalk at Tekka Market

Tekka Market is a place to be immersed in our Singaporean way of living. There is also a food centre full of culturally rich, vibrant and colourful stalls. Tekka Market is truly a melting pot that you will hear all different ethnic communities maintain their unique way of life with their sight and sound in food, fashion and languages. The rain did not damper the mood of sketchers and we all found our shelter to sketch and walked to the adjacent empty ground laid with 'fake grass' for our show and tell and group photos.

Last Saturday we went to Little India to sketch trying to bring some postitive energy to celebrate Deepavali. I sat alone in a quiet corridor opposite a very interesting blue shophouse. We had a Zoom meeting in the afternoon since we could have a show and tell at the end of the sketchwalk.

Left portion of a long sketch. The Great Madras, a boutique hotel was on the left with its art deco facade facing a quiet street. Dunlop Street where I was sitting, was comparatively busier with a few barber shops, restaurants and provision shops still seeing customers going in and out but all doors of the tour agencies were shut during this trying period.

Right portion of a long sketch. This blue colour shophouse caught my attention. The blue facade on second story was cladded with wood panels and it was the shortest shophouse at Dunlop Street. Cool & Joy Barber occupied a narrow shopfront between the two shophouses. It was so cool.

The Great Madras at Little India

I conducted a Master Class last Saturday for a group of BA students at The Great Madras Hotel, Little India. It was a very hot day but we were lucky to sketch in the shade. This image is taken by an app using iPhone called CamScanner. I still need to enhance it on Photoshop in file size and some details.

From 2019, I will upload my sketches directly from blogger without a link to my Flickr.

Opposite Indian Heritage Centre

180203_LittleIndia2

This was the second sketch at Little India just opposite Indian Heritage Centre at Clive Street. Added colours later. There were so many tourists and big coaches came and went while I did this sketch.

Master Class at Little India

180203_LittleIndia
180203_LittleIndia_photo

Last Saturday, I did a 5 to 8 mins demo to a group of Master Class students from LaSalle College of the Arts. It was a very hot day but it also drizzled for a while and I just sat there on the same spot. I thought it was my sweat dripping from my forehead. It was a fun outing!

At the Spur of the Moment

180126_LittleIndia

This sketch is after a sketch done in Little India. I did this at a spur of the moment at home after a long day at work and too much negative energy waiting to be released. That moment really transformed negative energy to positive energy.

Petain Road

171125_PetainRd_all
171125_PetainRd_playground
171125_PetainRd_park
171125_PetainRd_shophouses

Result of November Sketchwalk. There are three parts of Petain Road in this long sketch namely the shophouse, the park and the playground.

Petain Road was named by municipal government of Singapore in 1928 after Field Marshall Henri Philippe Petain, one of France’s greatest military heroes from the First World War. However, the name drew controversy when the French military force grew from bad to worst as Petain became the Prime Minister of France in 1940. There were suggestions to change the name of the road when it became a notorious red light district in Little India in the old days. Today, this row of beautiful shophouses are the homes of rich and famous with elaborate majolica floral ceramic tiles covering the walls and flowers, cranes and phoenix adorning the pillars and walls. Directly across Petain Road is a big park with lush green and a colourful playground.

Little India

170927_Dunlop Street

Adding details to an old sketch at Dunlop Street, Little India. No fountain pen for the first time.

My motivation for this piece? I always wanted to get the road signs in with no outline. That explains why the signes are almost in the centre.

First Outdoor Sketch after a brief hiatus

170909_LittleIndia

my demo piece for the students from LaSalle on a Saturday, so there were overlapping shapes, lines and washes here and there as I spoke.

As I talked about learning points for the students such as line qualities (thick, thin, continuous, broken lines), composition (mountain, valley, vertical, horizontal and oblique), tonal values (scale 0, 2, 5 , 8 and 10) and accent colours at 3 spots with washes, I finished a sketch with ink and washes.

This is also the first outdoor sketch after my eye surgery, such fun!

Norris Road in Little India

140819_NorrisRd
This was done in August inside the comfort of air cond car. The weather was scorching hot and humid. I think I park at the double yellow line at Norris Road in Little India. The highrise public housing at the rear and the lowrise shophouses in the front formed an interesting composition. Again, love the URA carpark sign in the sketch.

Exploring Little India with Liz

121225_LittleIndia1
121225_LittleIndia2

Two sketches done today on a Christmas Day with Liz and other sketchers. We had a great time exploring Little India, I did the first sketch at the junction of Jalan Besar and Dickson Road. In the second sketch, I captured the award winning hotel WanderLust on the left. The cars were blocking the view the whole time and I was lucky that the drivers did not come and drive them away when I was sketching them.

Merry Christmas or as Francis put it "Merry Sketchmas" everyone!
