Coffee Splashes again

It was raining outside and we needed to shop for a kids' party tonight to celebrate mid-autumn festival, so we headed to Food Republic at the basement of Parkway Parade for breakfast before shopping.

Did a quick line sketch with coffee splashes while hubby queuing for food. These two foreign kids had beautiful curly hairs that attracted me. The elder boy was playing a very small and old hand-held game while his sister was disturbing him. It reminded me of my two granddaughters when they were fighting most of the time at the dinner table.

As usual, people forming a line to buy coffee and food at Toast Box next to our tables are also phubbers, phub = phone + snub, people who are swiping their handphones according to Oxford Dictionaries.

I am using my old trusted Moleskine Concertina Sketchbook again and gel pen, yes not fountain pen. Back to basic sketching gear.

Trishaw Photo Booth

180929_Rasapura

I missed the official September Sketchwalk due to my eye check up before leaving for Taiwan tomorrow. So I did a line sketch during lunch break at Rasapura, Marina Bay Sands. So many tourists enjoying our local cuisine at the food court. It's a little pricy but ambiance is good and taste is yummy! There are two trishaw tables for photo taking, only found in touristy food court. — at Rasapura Masters foodcourt.

Three's a Crowd

180601_threesacrowd

Three's a Crowd is a dessert cafe located at the heartland of Tampines which includes ice cream, freshly baked cakes, coffees , tea and other dessert drinks at block 802 Avenue 4 just opposite my institution. I like to come here when I need some quiet moment or after my lunch to relax with two scoops of ice cream and a thick coffee. These two young men came, ordered, left within 15 minutes after having two drinks and sharing a cake. The young man on the right had a very unique hairstyle.

Tampines One Toast Box

171122_toastbox

I needed a local coffee after my lunch at Tampines One, Toast Box was just there but very crowded during lunch hour. There was a constant line at the counter and I was so lucky to find a very tight seat just next to the column at the back that I could see the entire cafe. An ideal angle to watch people and sketch. Two old uncles were chatting over coffee, office workers having lunch, executives looking at their phones all the time, mothers talking about their children and senior couples helping each other with their food and I was sitting there sketching, such is life!

I Love our Local Coffee

170917_Killiney

The freshly brewed coffee here is S$1.70, black and thick just the way I like. The shop just added the glass door and glass shopfront for a new air conditioned interior but the glass door never shut properly for that kind of heavy traffic to the shop.

In the past, the local coffee used beans that were drum-roasted with sugar, margarine and maize. The beans were sticky, shinny in dark black brown before they were ground and brewed with a sock-like cotton strainer.

Good Vibes Only

170912_stampinggroundcoffee

My very first cup of coffee for the day at 1pm here at cafe called "Stamping Ground Coffee", no wonder I was feeling strange in the morning without my coffee. This cafe outside my house has a rather long name. There are only three big tables inside the shop but if you don't mind the heat, there are seats outdoor.

Good food, good coffee, hope I have a sketching company next time. Good Vibes Only!

Wheeler's Yard

I was with the students for the visit to Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall in the morning since 10am followed by Balestier Heritage Trail in the afternoon. So I was really tired when it ended at around 5pm. I refused to go home to rest as I was so near to Wheeler's Yard; a hippest cafe housed in a massive warehouse at Lorong Ampas just a stone throw away from Zhongsan Mall when I parked my car. I decided to check it out and I found myself sketching over a cup of strong long black and a small plate of black pepper lime squids at Wheeler's Yard. I knew the staff were standing behind watching me sketch since the cafe was quite empty at that time of the day. As I prepared to leave, they requested to have a closer look at my sketchbook and took a picture of the cafe sketch. I should have taken a group photo with them holding the sketch but I forgot.

121212 Cafe Hopping

121212_cafehopping

I am still wide awake at 3am! Blame it on the coffee, lots of them this afternoon at cafe hopping sketchwalk. So I scan the pieces and put them together. The last two at McDonald were extra that I did at night when I went to the airport to send someone off. My very special 121212 sketches. Visit my flickr site to view individual sketches.

kopitiam at tampines mart

120118_kopitiam
120118_kopitiam_photoThe success story of Kopitiam - a popular local chain of coffee shops, is the story of Lim Ben Huat, a very savvy businessman who started working at a tender age of nine as a coffee stall helper at Esplanade Food Center. When he tendered for a coffee shop at Bishan Street 11 - a public housing estate for 2 million dollar in 1989, people thought he was crazy. Today, Kopitiam investment chain owns 8 food courts, 5 coffee shops, 2 cafes and about 20 stalls selling desserts.
