Meeting KC Lee from USk Kuala Lumpur

A short dinner and coffee chat after 6 years!

The last time we met KC Lee, Founder of USk Kuala Lumpur was in 2017 when USKSG was orgainising "We Draw ASEAN Together" with Temasek Poly. We should travel to and fro KL and SG to meet and sketch more often.

Monday office meeting in a room filled with boxes of images of ASEAN after our Global Community Day event. Everyone was working on laptops as the boss read from the paper.

It's ASEAN50 this year. We just completed an event and these are the boxes with ten flags of ASEAN countries. There are (from the top left): Vietnam, Singapore, Brunei, Loas, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, Philippines and Thailand.

at a meeting

I do not blog about my work but I am happy to share a sketch at work. This is just one of the meetings I attended. Got to be quick so it would not be noticed by others.

131007_meetingOffice meetings used to be attended by a few people and took a shorter time to end. But now meetings are much longer and attended by 13 to 15 people.

sketching at a meeting

"People may doodle as a strategy to help themselves concentrate," said study co-author Jackie Andrade, a University of Plymouth psychologist. "We might not be aware that we’re doing it, but it could be a trick that people develop because it helps them from wandering off into a daydream."

"Andrade’s findings, published in Applied Cognitive Psychology, are an interesting wrinkle on cognitive load theory: The mind has a limited amount of attention to give and, once occupied, stops processing other stimuli.

Cognitive load is exploited by magicians, whose verbal and physical flourishes distract from sleight-of-hand. It also explains why driving while talking on a hands-free headset is no safer than driving while holding a phone. And it could be the reason why doodling is so much better than daydreaming."

This is the start of the new Moleskine. Last week I attended a parents' briefing session at my son's school. It was held at the new library fitted with colourful seats. I added the colours later.

another sketch at meeting

Had to sketch this with such lively discussion among 2 ladies and so many gentlemen round the table. I prefer to sit at the back and sketch so I keep myself awake and attentive.

another crazy week

at home in may one meeting in may

Semester had started so it was a crazy week with lots of paperworks, meetings and teaching. Teaching was drained but fun when you did things together with the young people and I would hear everyone talking. At meetings it was only a few people talking. Back to my desk, I was talking to myself silently.

On the right is another doodling at an important meeting this week. It was done with a common ball-point pen. On the left is a sketch of part of my study desk at home done with my favourite Lamy fountain pen. My family is so looking forward to this weekend as my elder son will be back from Hong Kong to celebrate Mother's Day.

retreat or more meetings?

meeting
meeting, originally uploaded by tiastudio.

Last two days we had meeting(s) outside the office at a beautiful hotel. Talk and think, eat and drink. I did a sketch and can you tell who is the boss? Now back to office I am busy writing, writing and writing. There is no scanner in my office so I used my camera to take an image from my sketchbook. Hooray! This sketch is the very last page of my sketchbook. Will start a new sketchbook over the easter holidays. OK, back to work. I have deadlines to meet.

Happy easter holidays to all.

At a Seminar

0903_seminar
I attended a seminar on 'Meaningful Designs: An Elderly Perspective' last Friday afternoon organised by >60 Design Centre. This student was seen recording the proceedings.

The >60 Design Centre aims to generate public and industry interest in designing for the silver market through seminars, workshops and conferences. The Centre also works with the industry to develop products for the local as well as the global markets.

I am already actively involved with the elderly folks considering I have four ageing parents to take care of. My father-in-law had a major heart operation and my mother has bow legs. She was dignosed with osteoporosis many years ago. When she fell and fractured her thight two years ago, she spent a few months in hospital and went through countless physiotherapy sessions. We also installed grab bars everywhere at her residence, bought exercise machines and other health care products such as walking aids, portable toilet seat, hearing aids to enhance her quality of life. Today, if she is not playing with her two young grandchildren, she is playing her favourite tetris game on the game boy.

Day and Night

I had a few cups of coffee in the day at a meeting, a few glasses of wine at night and two fountain pen sketches to help me to remember the same week in February 2009.

Another meeting

TPstaffFeb09
Another sketch at a big meeting. I have a feeling no one is going to sit in front of me in the future meetings. They may want to sit behind me instead.

sketch at a forum

URA_talkFeb09

Sketches at the meetings on urbansketchers blog prompted me to post this sketch I did last Thursday at a forum. I went to the "President's Design Award Forum" presented by winners from the award 2008. The first two speakers were inspiring but the following presentatations by the representatives from the big corporate companies were less animated, so I sketched to keep myself awake. I showed it to the gentleman in the sketch, he was almost half asleep but smiled at me while pointing at his shoe and shook my hand. He left before the forum ended.

at a seminar

at a seminar, originally uploaded by tiastudio.

I want to post this drawing because I met the same lady in another forumn I attended in Nov 2008. This drawing was done in July 2008 during a small seminar with participants from different countries of the world. The lady who is holding the microphone is a translator for the Japanese speaker next to her. When I did this sketch, I was sitting behind my architect friend Kenta kishi whom I had not met for almost 10 years!
