Breakfast at Aroon Restaurant

Day 1 - 14 Aug 2025
At around 7:45am, we decided to find a coffee shop for a local breakfast so we took a Grab and asked the driver to bring us to one in Phuket Old Town. He rightfully brough us to Aroon Restaurant and we saw the locals streaming in with grab delivery men making a line outside the shop waiting to get their orders.

I love to have the hot soup in the morning but it was not ready for breakfast so I had "Laksa"; vermicelli in tasty yellowish sauce and my hubby had the crispy prata with eggs and beef curry. Coffee and tea were very strong.

The boss sitting at the counter collecting money and his beautiful daughter in her very colourful outfit and head scarf walking up and down the aisle chitchatting with the customers while getting orders. Another very old man came out of the kitchen with our tea and coffee asked when we understood Bahasa Melayu! We got our order right with limited vocab.

Mee Pok Time

In the sketch, it said Meepok time means having a bowl of noodles at Lau Lim Mee Pok at Simpang Bedok. One of my favourite hang-out places for breakfast.

Fish Soup Brunch

181126_FishSoup
It is final week of November. First week of December will be a very busy week for me so this morning I drove to Toa Payoh to have my favourite fish soup to start the week. This table was occupied by taxi drivers who were very animated in their conversation. Fun to listen though.

Tai Thong Crescent

180904_TaiThongCrescent
I sketch this place a few times in the past and I witness the demolition of old houses to make way for the new expensive condominiums. The South River Prawn Noodles is still there and I was lucky to find the corner seat to sketch after a satisfying bowl of prawn noodles.

Hari Raya

180615_HariRaya

Yesterday 15 Jun was Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Muslims in Singapore end their time of fasting with a joyous celebration of forgiveness, fellowship and food. Marking the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan is the festival of Eid, known in Singapore as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa. It was also a public holiday for us so we went to Simpang Bedok for breakfast. We saw so many families in their ethnic costumes passing by the coffeeshop after parking their cars. These two guys look really cool with big army bag and jubahs

The Same Lady

180210_MarineParade

I sketch this same big lady for a few times at the same coffee shop. She is not wearing her glasses now so I think she must have been going through an eye operation recently. She was in my stories and sketches here and here.

This Afternoon Lunch at An Shun

180209_ToaPayoh

Today's lunch at my favourite fish soup stall at Toa Payoh, also the meeting place for so many taxi drivers. The taxis will take up almost all the nearest parking lots near to the coffee shop that sells famous fish soup, yong tau foo, chicken rice and claypot laksa.

Chinese New Year decorations are easy to spot at heartland coffee shop like this one.

Simpang Bedok

180201_meepok

Lunch at my favourite noodles shop at Simpang Bedok. This building called Bedok Market Place on the left in my sketch opposite the shop used to be an avant-garde building designed by local architect Tang Guan Bee for Far East Organisation. It is now slowly transformed into "creative culinary stalls" that are that your typical hawkers.

local food before leaving for India

171208_meepok

I will be leaving for India for a sketching trip this evening, so before I tuck into curry and spices, let's have a bowl of my favourite meepok and kopi-O at my favourite place, Lau Lim mee pok at Simpang Bedok.

Parenting with iPad

171123_lunch

I am alright with tissue box on the dinning table at coffee shop but not the iPad. Why are the young parents letting their kids glue to the cartoons on the iPad at the dinning table? The parents should try to engage the children with meaningful conversations or activities from a very young age at the dinning table.

I Love our Local Coffee

170917_Killiney

The freshly brewed coffee here is S$1.70, black and thick just the way I like. The shop just added the glass door and glass shopfront for a new air conditioned interior but the glass door never shut properly for that kind of heavy traffic to the shop.

In the past, the local coffee used beans that were drum-roasted with sugar, margarine and maize. The beans were sticky, shinny in dark black brown before they were ground and brewed with a sock-like cotton strainer.

Sunday Breakfast

170903_MarineParade

So many uncles gathered together at the coffee shop for Sunday breakfast, are their wives at the wet markets nearby?

The old uncles spoke so loud about a ghost story at the old Tampines Road and used phrases like ”电脑合成” (digitally manipulated) and other proper Chinese terms rather than mixtures of Mandarin and English or Singlish, I was impressed.

Marine Parade

131028_MarineParade
I had to get new supplies for my medication on high cholesterol, I had only 3 pills left. After getting my pills, I went to eat my favourite porridge at this coffee shop opposite the clinic. There were so many older folks around me, Marine Parade as an old town, is aging too.
