Centre Point Mural

A forgotten work since 2016. An old post here

4 of us did this very big mural wall at basement 2 of Centrepoint. The artwork was laser printed on the big metal panels, a successful experiment at that time. Not etched, not vinyl sheet.

central fire station

120811_firestation
August is the month we celebrate our National Day on 9 Aug. Last year four of my sketches were made into stamps with National Day First Day Cover 2011. To celebrate our National Day this year, I decided to sketch our Singapore Central Fire Station which is predominantly a red and white colonial style building.

The weather was too hot so I did this under the air conditioning comfort at the food court opposite the building. The vans, the cars and the plants blocked the lower part of the building most of the time but I had no intention to do the details anyway. It was timely to do this sketch with the red and white National Flag right on the top of the red and white building!

old market

120710_CampbellMarket_Penang
This was the morning that we said Adios to Penang. So we roamed the market at Cambell Street trying to find some local breakfast. We had Chinese braised noodle 'Lor Mee' and the Indian pancake 'roti prata' plus a black coffee 'kopi-o'. It was interesting to have Chinese and Indian hawkers located side by side and sharing tables hormoniously. Only in Penang!

art deco style old factory

101204_oldfactory

P1030091Along Serangoon Road next to Kallang River, National Aerated Water Co. Ltd. occupied this factory building since 1950s that produced old brand soft drinks such as Sinalco, Kickapoo and Royal Crown (RC) Cola - all my favourite soft drinks when I was a little girl. The building is now vacant and there is no sign of any new development. I love the proportion of this building, its side oval window, brick parapet wall and distinctive linear, geometric shaped decorative spire as the typical art deco vertical element.

MacPherson Area

101106_ThaiThongCrs

The weather was hot and humid. I did another sketch at Thai Thong Crescent, McPherson area while sitting in my car with the air-conditioning comfort. It was difficult as the cars were moving in and out of the parking lots all the time. Although there was a van blocking my view as I was about half way into the sketch, I managed to complete it with the composition that I wanted.

You can see my earlier sketch of the area here.

ION Orchard

101016_ION

It was a hot Saturday afternoon at 34 deg C according to the weather forecast. I was at Orchard Road, our prestigious and busiest shopping belt. On my way to collect my car, I suddenly remember it was 29th World Sketchcrawl Day. I decided to do a sketch of this gigantic shopping mall - ION Orchard. This building is one of the most popular shopping centres so on the ground floor with a street frontage, one could find all the upmarket brands such as Giorgio Armani, Prada, Louis Vuitton and many others.

I sat on the curved, bright red street bench just outside Louis Vuitton and occasionally, I could feel the cold air coming out from the shop when a security guard opened the main door for the customers who were queuing outside the shop. I found it absurd to queue under such weather just to get into the shop! May be it only happen on a busy Saturday afternoon.

another building illustration

Katong Mall

The new Katong Mall at East Coast Road. The building is now under construction and the building owner wants an artist's impression. I decided on a portrait format so that all the pieces are of the same format when these illustrations are framed with the same design. It will be unison if they are all hung on the wall.

Sky sprinkled with salt and road with lots of splashing.

building illustration

Drycott8_big

I agreed to do a visual for a newly completed luxurious condominium. I went to the site last Friday which was a public holiday; trying to sketch but was chased away by the security guards! They said I need a permission from CISCO! I could not even take a picture of the exterior so I went home and collected all the images on the web. Obviously, this piece was not drawn on location. I must admit I had lots of fun doing it under the air conditioning comfort of my tiny work space at the corner of my big bedroom. Perhaps it is time for me to set up a studio so I can do more paintings. I will put that in my "to do list".

A3 size, ink, watercolour and salt.

Central Business District

Central Business District

The best time to sketch the central business district in any city is on Saturday and Sunday. No crowd and no traffic. This sketch rekindles my memories as an architect except that the building is not designed by me. I used to pour coffee but this time I had fun experimentating with salt and lots of splashing.

Tanjong Pagar Railway Station

100626_Railway Station Interior
On 24 May, 2010, the leaders of Singapore and Malaysia agreed to move the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station from Tanjong Pagar to Woodlands, near the border by the 1 July 2011. It is a significant news because the land occupied by the Railway Station and the long railway tracks belong to Malaysia on Singapore soil. The sensitive talk about swapping the land parcels between two countries is once again in the media again but this time in a more positive tone. Read here.

Since the announcement, many photographers flocked to this place trying to capture the mood and feeling of the place. We, the sketchers were there on last Saturday morning making our presence felt with our pens and brushes. Tanjong Pagar Railway Station was built in 1932, the architecture is said to be influenced by the architect of Finland's Helsinki Station, Eliel Saarinen. On this station's entrance and waiting hall shows four reliefs of white marble, allegories of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce and Transport. They are works by Rudolfo Nolli.

These were drawn on folded watercolour paper of 200gm/sqm and fountain pen with Noodler's ink. Below are some photos on the sketchwalk which caught the attention of the public in the station main hall.

Corner 57

100612_tiongbahru12
Last Saturday, I wanted to try something new so I decided to use the paper and pastels from Paul, one of the sketchers whom I will be exhibiting my sketches with from 30 Jun to 17 Jul. I had to use his palette and that was a new challenge on location when you were using unfamiliar art materials and tools. I quite enjoyed the process of this new experience.

Row 81 - the sky was still bright so I drove down to sketch after the conference ended at around 6pm at the near-by Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. It was a quiet neighbourhood.

Corner 71

100523_tiongbahru3_colour
I call this piece "Corner 71". I agree to display these Tiong Bahru sketches at an exhibition on 30 Jun with 3 other urban sketchers at White Canvas Gallery at Tiong Bahru. This long format of size 45cm x 15cm was done on a new sketchbook CACHET by Daler Rowney. Click here to see the first sketch on this new sketchbook.
