Old Watercolour Paper

I found some old watercolour papers with splashes and used it for this morning sketchwalk at Orchard Road. Added a bit of darker colours at home for the contrast.

Result of July Sketchwalk at Youth Park

July Sketchwalk at Youth Park. I am exploring black and white though the urge to add red to the bus is strong.

Situated in the heart of Orchard Road near Somerset area, Youth Park is often recognised for its bright and funky structures. The park consisted of an elevated stage, a roofed-pavilion, ‘The Red Bus’— a bright building emulating a red double-decker bus—and a myriad of sculptures scattered around the area. It is a popular spot for hosting activities and events targetting at the young people.

Last Sketch of 2018

This is the last sketch of the year 2018 done at the last sketchwalk at Emerald Hill in my last few pages of the Moleskine Concertina Sketchbook aka Japanese Album Large.

This place holds lots of memories for me. I was working at URA's Urban Planning Department in early 80s and urban design was a new thing at that time. We started the urban design for Emerald Hills and adopted the woonerf system for the area.

A woonerf is a living street, as originally implemented in the Netherlands and in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking northern portion of Belgium. Techniques include shared space, traffic calming and low speed limits.

With woonerf in place for so many years, Emerald Hill is now a very different and charming upmarket residential enclave. — at Emerald Hill, Singapore.

This month’s sketchwalk will be at Orchard Road, around Emerald Hill and Cuppage area. There’s a nice view from 313 Somerset or Orchard Gateway as seen in the banner, or you can sketch from the glass bridge over Orchard Road. Or check out the mural in Centrepoint’s basement created by our USk folks while sipping some kopi! There's lots to see, sketch, and eat in the area.

Result of December Sketchwalk

141227_Orchard
141227_Orchard_moleskine
I attended the last sketchwalk of the year with a tired body but high in spirit as I was not going to miss the sketchwalk again.

I did not sleep at all the night before after arriving in Singapore from Hong Kong at around 11pm on Friday. By the time I reached home, it was 12am and I was tossing on the bed since. However, I made up my mind I had to attend the last sketchwalk of this year even if I were to turn up late!

I did one quick line sketch on the Moleskine before the loose watercolour piece. Look at the photo, where were the people and traffic? Orchard Road was too quiet during this festive seasons. May be it was still early but I thought everyone was out of town and there were visibly more tourists on the streets. It was the same in Hong Kong on Boxing Day when our taxi driver told us his business dropped during this time of the year.

Orchard Road has also changed so much beyond recognition. There are so many mega malls sprouting up here and there except old granny like Mandarin Hotel with the pointed fins at the top is still there standing high and tall. So I decided to sketch it as it is the Orchard Road that I remember.

250 x 250mm, 300gsm Daler-Rowney Aquarelle paper. Hero9018 fountain pen with Noodler's ink and watercolours, about two hours for both.

Last Sketchwalk of the Year

Sketch by Daman Angir

Merry Christmas! For this month's sketchwalk, meet us at 9AM outside McDonald's at SCAPE. The closest MRT station is Somerset. We will have a quick briefing and then start on the sketchwalk toward Plaza Singapura.

The route in the map is only the general direction and you are encouraged to take your own detours to discover other views of Orchard Rd than the obvious. For example, take Somerset Road instead. There is a skateboard park there. And if you go up to the 3rd floor of Orchard Gateway, you will get to sketch the new Library@Orchard. Climb up to the top of Orchard Central and you get a bird's eye view of the area. Yes, explore both inside and outside of the malls. Or around and behind. Turn up to Emerald hill to sketch shophouses. Or stop by a cafe, relax and sketch.

Pace yourself so that you can gather with the group again at 12PM sharp OUTSIDE of the entrance to Plaza Singapura. If it rains, look for the nearest shelter there.

See you on saturday. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join. No drawing skill level required. No fees either. Just bring your own drawing materials and show up on time. If you are late, just look for anyone with a sketchbook drawing along the way. Only in case of emergencies, call 91070735.

Spree n Sip

Spree n Sip
120408_draftI am taking part in a visual art group exhibition on material consumerism called "$uper $ingapore $ale" presented by Galerie Sogan $ Art from 22 May to 2 Jun 2012 at ION Art Gallery.

People are surprised at what I paint when I am not urban sketching on locations. The title of this painting is "Spree n Sip". It is an attempt to create a humourous figurative narrative with a whimsical approach in common objects, places and people in our highly materialistic, hustling and bustling world that is dominated by high fashion luxury acquisition. Playful, frisky, affluent and well-endowed people are relaxed and find pleasure in a comfortable brightly lit cafe or restaurant enjoying food, wine, desert and coffee after a satisfying shopping spree.

last few sketches of the year

111231_scapepark
111231_cineleisure
Orchard Road mall is crowded with people but the outdoor walkway lacks interesting icons, well designed kiosks, artistic signages, festive sculptures which are badly designed and installed. The scales are very flat and dull.

This corner at Scape off the main Orchard belt is dead and quiet. The blue umbrellas and the big shades cast by the trees attracted me to sketch the otherwise dry and empty area.

After show and tell, some of us went to nearby food court at Cineleisure where I did a sketch on my Muji sketchbook.

last sketchwalk of year 2011, hello 2012!

111231_ionorchard
111231_scapepark_photoTo celebrate the last day of the year, I decided to do a colourful piece for the otherwise dull Orchard Road Mall in my personal opinion. This morning we had the last sketchwalk of the year 2011 and we met so many new and young faces. There was Charles, a 9-year-old boy who stood next to me in the photo. He joined us for the very first time.

Spread the good vibes of sketching people! Looking forward to a great 2012 ahead!

ION Orchard

101016_ION

It was a hot Saturday afternoon at 34 deg C according to the weather forecast. I was at Orchard Road, our prestigious and busiest shopping belt. On my way to collect my car, I suddenly remember it was 29th World Sketchcrawl Day. I decided to do a sketch of this gigantic shopping mall - ION Orchard. This building is one of the most popular shopping centres so on the ground floor with a street frontage, one could find all the upmarket brands such as Giorgio Armani, Prada, Louis Vuitton and many others.

I sat on the curved, bright red street bench just outside Louis Vuitton and occasionally, I could feel the cold air coming out from the shop when a security guard opened the main door for the customers who were queuing outside the shop. I found it absurd to queue under such weather just to get into the shop! May be it only happen on a busy Saturday afternoon.
