September Sketchwalk at Upper Circular Road

Above sketch by Tia

For this month's sketchwalk, we will meet at the bus stop outside The Central at 9AM (see map). After a short briefing, we will cross the road and walk through Upper Circular Road and then through Circular road. Take your time to draw what you wish. There will be shophouses, watering holes and cafes along the way. We encourage you to take your own detours. If you prefer to walk along the river, go ahead. But please take note that at 12PM we will all gather again outside the UOB Plaza along the Singapore river (see map).

If you come later, no problem. Just walk along the route in the map and you will find us. Look for people drawing along the side of the road.

Everybody is welcome. No permission to join or attendance to be taken. Just show up during the time stated. See you all there.

quiet street on a hot Sunday

121028_LorTelok

Too busy at work as the new semester has just started. I have been sketching but have not been posting on USK blog for a while. Oct sketch walk at Clarke Quay was fun last Saturday and it gave me energy to continue to do this sketch on Sunday in the Singapore River vicinity. It was a hot Sunday and a very quiet street on the weekend. However, I am sure this place would come alive at night with the nightclubs and bars in this area.

The corner iconic building was built in 1938 by Ho Kwong Yew, a local architect in an art deco modernist style at that time. Archipelago brewery now occupies the ground floor with a very open concept. I also love sketching the colourful city car parking signs on the right.

Circular Road

Circular Road might be named after the curve road that was built parallel to Singapore River. This place used to be a Teochew enclave and most of the shops here were selling fabrics and textiles. In 1989, Circular Road and other areas in the proximity of Singapore River were gazetted and the shophouses were preserved and transformed into new businesses mainly restaurants, pubs and bars. Interesting post about the old days here.
