Result of June Sketchwalk

I decided to just do a A4 sheet not on my pano sketchbook since I came very late. Also today I talked too much while sketching but it was fun catching up with friends over kopi and sketch at the same time. The linework is feathering not to my liking so I need to sketch faster.

June Sketchwalk at Simpang Bedok

Hi Sketchers!

For June 2026's month-end sketchwalk, we'll be heading to Simpang Bedok. Once a traditional Malay village, the area has grown into a well-known food spot in eastern Singapore, especially for its late-night dining scene. Located near Tanah Merah MRT station, Simpang Bedok is home to a mix of eateries, from longstanding prata shops to newer concepts at Bedok Marketplace, making it an interesting neighbourhood to explore and sketch.

Please note that the show and tell location is tentatively a space outside at the side of Giant Supermarket (TBC on the day itself)

Sketching at Sam Leong Road with sketcher friends. Hope this row of beautiful shophouses will be preserved. the surrounding has since changed a lot. Hightrise buildings are sprouting up in this neigbourhood very quickly.

Result of July Sketchwalk

A very different July Sketchwalk we have a “hold-up show and tell” on zoom. My sketch was done over a brunch and 2 Kopi-O gao (thick black coffee) at Simpang Bedok.

Bedok 216 Hawker Centre

Bedok 216 Hawker Centre is a typical market cum food centre in the east. Very popular and it is now connected to all the other amenities in Bedok Central such as Bedok Mall, Bedok Heart Beat and Bedok Town Square. It was a Monday so many food stalls were closed but it was still crowded with residents looking for breakfast.

Itacho at Bedok Mall

I was hungry so I drove to Bedok Mall to find food. Guess I just love Japanese sashimi and sushi too much that I ended sketching the sushi chef again at Itacho.

Simpang Bedok

Lunch at my favourite noodles shop at Simpang Bedok. This building called Bedok Market Place on the left in my sketch opposite the shop used to be an avant-garde building designed by local architect Tang Guan Bee for Far East Organisation. It is now slowly transformed into "creative culinary stalls" that are that your typical hawkers.

Teo's noodle at Bedok

It is weekend and such a long queue at Teo's noodle at Bedok. Everyone in the line was looking at the smart phone except a few middle-age aunties.

Must try since we were not in the hurry. I could also do a sketch while my hubby in this sketch in red top was waiting in line. The noodle was really good except getting a little salty towards the end, still yum! Will definitely come back again and again.

Even my other favourite local dish was seeing a even longer line. It was not too long a queue when I last visited the stall and did a sketch here

Dinner at Bedok

One of the last pages on the Moleskine filled with sketches from Malacca trip, so I continued the Moleskin with a sketch during dinner at Bedok Hung Kang Fish Soup stall. The old Teochew couples spent long hours daily at the stall and they must be pleased there was always a constant queue.

High Inflation for a bowl of Mee Pok?

Seriously, I was not sure whether I should continue to eat at my favourite place in Simpang Bedok anymore. The price for a medium size bowl of Mee Pok has gone up from S$4.80 to S$5.00 since 1 May. So, now the prices are S$4, S$5 and S$6 for small, medium and large bowls. It used to be S$2.50 when they were at Jalan Tua Kong near my house.

uncles and cold beer

I sat at the smoking section and sketched these uncles drinking tiger beer bottle after bottle. There were pretty Tiger beer girls going around pouring the beer for these uncles. These girls or sometimes older aunties with heavy make up received commissions by the numbers of bottles they sold, so they happily poured away!

Back to Berlin Wall in Singapore

This is the Berlin Wall in Bedok Reserviour Park today. I did a sketch on 21 Jan 2011 on the same location. The difference is that the trees have grown taller and there is now a bistro on the left. I went there for a coffee only to find out that it opened from 5pm to 11pm.

Bedok Reservoir near my work place is really quiet during lunch hours. There are four panels of Berlin Wall enclosed in a glass box in this circular pavilion. I thought something of this significant nature should be displayed in the busy city area for more people to see. On the panels, there are the pictures of two kings, one smiling, one sad, drawn by grafitti artist Dennis Kaun in the weeks following the fall of the Wall. This motif of the two kings has been repeatedly painted and repainted on the Berlin Wall long before it fell. They are called "Kings of Freedom".

The day the panels were unveiled, the authority said this would be an attractive spot in the park and a bistro will be built as an extension to the Berlin Wall installation. One year has passed and there is still no sign of the bistro.

Last Sketchwalk for the year 2012

Hi Everyone!

This upcoming sketchwalk will be in favour of the people living in the east because we will be sketching around Bedok! It's a pretty busy and big neighbourhood. We will meet at the Bedok Food Centre just beside Bedok Mrt Station at 930am. You can have your breakfast there before the event (or eat and draw when the sketching starts like some of you like to do) From the food centre, we will hand out highlighted locations for you to draw and explore so you can head for all the places that are famous in Bedok.

You will be able to submit the sketches done in this sketchwalk to Epigram to be included in the upcoming "I Love Bedok" book. Yes, it's in the same series as the "I love Toa Payoh" book. Only the best sketches will be chosen for the book so do as many as you can and submit them! You will get 1 complimentary copy if 1 drawing gets into the book. And 2 copies if 3 or more drawings gets featured.

We will have just 3 groups this time + 1 special ah-hoc afternoon group (see below).

Very busy area. There is a regular blind busker here who starts playing from evening. Said to have good voice.

• Bedok Bus Interchange and surrounds

There are some iconic places at the interchange itself that I think should be documented. One is the flower shop, the other is a medicine shop that sells really inexpensive toiletries. And further in there's the wet market and lots of mom and pop shops (I'd recommend one called Kian Wee Stationery Shop -- has those old school toys too!)
