Airport

We were very early at the airport so I had time to do a sketch at Hong Kong International Airport 香港國際機場. My husband could spend time walking around the huge airport to enjoy the exhibition and shopping or sampling of food and drink while I was sketching peacefully at the spacious lounge before arriving at the gate to take off to Singapore.

Dim Sum Breakfast in Hong Kong

A dim sum place so affordable to benefit the neighbourhood. The very nice boss mingled around the crowd and collected the order slips. We met the boss, Ah Hua in his 50s - so flamboyant and loud. He worked in Singapore for 20 years and told us "I only go back to Singapore to collect rent" wow......

Tai Kwun

I posted this sketch using my iPhone on Facebook. Here is a scanned copy of Tai Kwun, Hong Kong.
This place used to be the main police station and house the prison. Now it is a heritage site. I really enjoyed the contemporary art exhibition there. This is the first page of a new sketchbook. Also the first sketch in Hong Kong after Taiwan.

8 pages of Moleskine Japanese Album at IFC, Hong Kong on the last day after check-in at the Airport Express at Hong Kong Station. It was windy and shady in the afternoon on the open terrace at IFC. Shake Shack from New York also just opened for business one floor above the open terrace and the queue was ridiculously long.

Hong Kong sketches

I was in Hong Kong visiting my granddaughters from 13 to 17 Oct, 2017. There was no time to sketch and there was even a T8 typhoon warning on Sunday morning when we got out of the hotel looking for my favourite porridge shop at the corner of Belcher's and Sands Street.

Most of the Hong Kong sketches were done on the last day - eating at Tim Ho Wan after checked-in, on the Aiport Express MTR train and one last one at the airport lounge, best thing to do while waiting to board the plane.

Love sketching at the airport lounge, especially sketching the plane that I would be boarding soon.

Off to Hong Kong

First time got a seat with ample leg room and sat next to a design graduate I taught around ten years ago. While she was sleeping on my right, I did a sketch inside the SIA cabin looking left. It felt like I was still sitting there watching.

So this is the last page in the Moleskine that I brought to Hong Kong. It was taken with iPhone camera as my iMac had died on me that I could not scan the sketches.

A few 'Firsts'

Every year I will miss April sketchwalk as I attend my granddaughter's birthday celebrations in Hong Kong on 1 May. I normally don't intend to sketch in order to spend all the quality time we have with the family in Hong Kong. This year, I did three smaller sketches at the airport and one slightly bigger piece at the apartment when the girls are playing. This sketch has a few 'firsts' - My first Kuretake Zig Letter CocoIro brush pen on first generation of perfect sketchbook.

A sketch at Hong Kong International Airport. The flight from Hong Kong to Singapore was delayed not once but twice for about 45 minutes in total. This building was a stand-alone building like a octopus staring at me inviting me to sketch. A check on the web revealed that it was called North Satellite Concourse designed by Aedas and completed in Dec 2009 to help with boarding via aero bridges. It was not linked to the main terminals so passengers arriving or departing from NSC were ferried by shuttle buses every 4 minutes.

May Day Hong Kong Trip

I had a very short trip to meet my son and his family in Hong Kong over the May day holiday. I only had time to sketch at the Changi Airport, during crowded dim sum lunch and one early morning from the hotel room in that sequence.

First time I noticed while sketching the airplane that there were many activities and vehicles moving at the same time around the airplane. The sketch at the forever crowded Maxim's Palace had a story this time that the dim sum restaurant used the online queue system so we could stay at home and managed our time before taking a cab to the restaurant with the given online queue system. The hotel window panes at Ibis Central & Sheung Wan in Hong Kong were in ORANGE colour! What a pity with such a nice view, sigh! I picked up the light and shadow and just added some random colours here and there since everything was in ORANGE.

Dinner in Hong Kong

Family dinner at Chiu Chow Garden, Jardine House. Our table had a 5-week old baby and a 18-month toddler while most of the people there were in office suits on a Monday evening.

Hong Kong

I was baby sitting my new-born granddaughter and stole some time to do this sketch. Very therapeutic to do the mountain in black ink, I could just go on and on.

dim sum breakfast

Typical breakfast place in Hong Kong. This one is just opposite our hotel - Traders Hotel. The Son and mother were sitting there seemingly waiting for another person since there was another table setting on their table. The son was reading the newspaper while talking to the old lady and he appeared to be very annoyed and raised his voice at the old lady at times. I watched him walked away with his papers and left the old lady behind. She took her time to walk away from the table towards the exit. They did not have their dim sum breakfast. Oh dear!

Sketched this from my son's 58th floor apartment at Hong Kong west. There are three peaks and the far end is the Victoria Peak. On the right is the Hong Kong University which is very modern with roof gardens and wind turbines on the rooftops.

Taiwan Sketching Trip

On 29 Dec 2012, Ch'ng Kiah Khien from Penang, Malaysia was conducting a workshop at Taiwan University for Urban Sketchers Taiwan. I just detoured my trip to Taipei for that weekend to join in the afternoon sketching fun after their workshop proper. This picture was taken immediately after the workshop and just before the sketching session.
