All done on location. Got disrupted as the workshop led by Prof Pochou Chang settled on the same spot. So I went really slow and added the colours after the group left. — at 萬春宮．台中媽祖.

First Page of Taichung Sketchbook 2

Taichung Second Market is the first sketch in Taichung Sketchbook 2. Moleskine Japanese Album. This 100-year-old market used to be a place of pricy extravagant merchandise in the Japanese colonial period. There are so many eclectic extensions now but you can still see the old part of the hexagonal-shaped market (六角楼）with intricate architectural details.

Meeting my Dad

Had lunch with my brother and 86-year-old father at Rasapura on the request of my father who now seldom goes out of the house. He had a great day today and noticed the world outside now was very crowded, busy, noisy but lively to him.

Hungry so sneak out to have supper at Madnest at East Coast Road.

Starting a new A6 Moleskine sketchbook bought in 2013 at Miro Foundation in Barcelona. The paper is much thinner and cannot take watercolours. So I sketch very fast with crisp lines to avoid 'bleeding' over to the pager behind.

October Sketchwalk at Sentosa Boardwalk

This month's sketchwalk will be along the waterfront between Vivo City and Sentosa. Sketch along the boardwalk or along the waterfront, or go up to the roof of Vivo City for an elevated view. A sprawling view of Sentosa's skyline can be seen from mainland, while you can catch the view of the cable cars, Vivo City, Harbourfront and the ferry terminal from the boardwalk. There's good food and shopping all around, and air-conditioned eateries to sketch from.

This is Taichung sketch book 1 in Moleskine Japanese Album format. All sketches here were posted earlier.

Liu Yuan Church

The Liu Yuan Presbyterian Church is the first church built in Taichung. LiuYuan Church's design follows Church of England architecture. Completed in 1916, the church has brick walls that are partially stone-washed, and large arched and hexagonal windows. A newer grey church sitting next to it presents a different contrasting appearance.

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony is inside this historical old railway station, love the ambiance and the space framed by the ornate cast iron pillars and structure.

Taichung Old Railway Station

There were workers putting up stage and tents for weekend concert at the big plaza in front of the station. The view was partially obstructed and mood dampened. This is only the upper storey of the charming station. I didnt want to sketch the lower part of the building.

First Sketch in Taichung

We arrived in Taichung from Taipei on 3 Oct. Next morning, we took part in Asia-Link Sketchwalk in Taichung from 4 to 7 Oct 2018. After registration on 4 Oct afternoon, I sketched this view from the event venue - Taichung Old Railway Station. It is the view of Taichung Central District.

This took me ages to scan and join this long sketch in Moleskine Japanese Album.

Taipei Skyline

Bought a NT$600 (about US$19) ticket to the top of Taipei 101 and did a sketch at the quiet corner amidst the loud and noisy tourists occasionally. I could have sketched the Grand Hotel Taipei 圆山大饭店 on the far right but too tired after one and a half hour up there.

Photo on the left was me sketching on top of Taipei 101, the tourists come and go in big numbers. Photo on top was me holding the sketch at Taichung upon request of fellow participants at Asia-Link Sketchwalk.

So nice to have some quiet time to do a sketch in Taipei — at 華山1914文化創意產業園區.

First Night in Taipei

I arrived in Taipei from Singapore via Hong Kong by Cathay Pacific and spending my first night in Taipei at Ximending which was 15 minutes walk from our hotel near Taipei Main Station. Too many people at this touristy spot, too tired to sketch in more crowd and colouring. I also wanted to eat all the good food here and I had 阿宗面线 - a must when you are here!

I may add the colours later...depending on my mood, lah.

Taipei Sketchbook

Finally find some time to post my sketches of Taiwan. This is one sketchbook for Taipei from 30 Sep to 3 Oct 2018.
I did five sketchbooks on my recent Taiwan Trip in conjunction with Asia-Link Sketchwalk 2018 at Taichung. All these photos were taken at the hotel room in Taichung.

Lu Chuan Riverwalk

Too busy to post as the term had started on 15 Oct and I had a new subject to teach for many classes since my retirement and hired back as a full time teaching staff. It also took me ages to scan all the sketches in Moleskine Japanese Album and join them by digital means.

Here is the last sketch in the second concertina sketchbook. This sketchbook is all bout Taichung. The first sketchbook is on Taipei.

Taichung has two Rivers to be proud of - Lu Chuan and Liu Chuan Rivers. Lu Chuan River now enrich biodiversity within the central district of the city. Tourists and locals were seen enjoying themselves sitting at the bank with the huge icecream bought from the nearby famous brick-clad building seen in this sketch. Because of that, there were ants crawling all over the place where we sat to sketch this beautiful scene at Lu Chuan which was only 10 minutes walk from the Taichung Old Railway Station, our event venue.

Sketches for the Trip

Last day in Sun Moon Lake on 10 Oct, also Taiwan's national day so I asked for a date stamp from the hotel on the sketchbook. Packing to leave wonderful Taiwan tomorrow to Hong Kong. These are the completed 4 Moleskines, 1 Saunders and 1 Laboran (continue from last Taiwan trip).
