January Sketchwalk
On January 30th, meet us at the the Big Steps along Sago Street at Chinatown complex 9:30AM.
We will be sketching Chinatown because it will soon be Chinese New Year and it is bustling with activity and full of decorations this season.
As always, sketchwalk is free and easy. Use whatever materials you bring and sketch whatever catches your interest. You have 3 whole hours of sketching with friends and fellow artists. Afterwhich, we will meet at 12:30PM behind the Buddha Tooth Relic temple.
During this sketchwalk, Ng Woon Lam will be doing a live painting demo. His new book "Color Theory and Design Concepts" will be on sale too at $60 for the Urban Sketchers (normal retail price $75). See a sample HERE. Please bring enough cash if you want to purchase his book.

another airport sketch

A sketch at Hong Kong International Airport. The flight from Hong Kong to Singapore was delayed not once but twice for about 45 minutes in total. This building was a stand-alone building like a octopus staring at me inviting me to sketch. A check on the web revealed that it was called North Satellite Concourse designed by Aedas and completed in Dec 2009 to help with boarding via aero bridges. It was not linked to the main terminals so passengers arriving or departing from NSC were ferried by shuttle buses every 4 minutes.

DisneySea

The eye of this whale would open and close but the kids soon got bored of it and asked to take the rides which had very long queues. I spent longer time at this cafe table and noticed a common phenomena same as the rest of the world - everyone was either looking at the smartphone or taking photos with the camera phone. The red flower and text stamps were added later from Muji store near Tokyo International Forum. The Japanese characters mean "Thank You".

Lunch at DisneySea

This was one of the quickest sketches I had ever done. While my family members were queuing for food at DisneySea, I offered to look after the stroller and bags again while sitting on the bench and did a very quick sketch. You had to be led by the waitress to your seats after ordering so I could only manage a few lines for this sketch.

Second Sketchbook

This was done at Tokyo City View at Roppongi Hills. Great view when we arrived at around 3:30pm. I was fortunate to witness the beautiful sunset when the sky was already getting darker at 4:30pm. This is drawn on the second sketchbook in Moleskine Japanese Album Large format. I filled up 25 pages in one long book including a few journal pages.

Tokyo DisneyLand

I was the 'Big Locker' for my family during our Japan Trip at Tokyo Disneyland. While everyone was queuing and taking the StarJet ride at TomorrowLand, I found a shady place, bought a coffee, sketched and kept an eye on the stroller, camera bags, handbags for my family. This is also the last page of the very long sketchbook.

Tsukiji Market

A traditional Japanese meal at the popular Tsukiji Market is just perfect for this trip. When I did a google check on the restaurant we visited, it was quite a famous one for the tourists and the locals. According to their website www.iwasasushi.com, they have been at Tsukiji Market for more than 20 years and there are only 14 counter seats, small but enjoyable restaurant. Saturday, January 09, 2016
