First Sketch after Eye Surgery

180830_OlehOleh
First sketch after my cataract removal eye surgery. I need to be at home for 3-hourly eye drop and to avoid dusty and crowded places for fear of infection. After my eye check-out this afternoon, it's good to be able to go outdoor for a short while and did a quick sketch again.

Draft Sketch

180823_FEO4
Today at 11:30am, I am going for cataract removal surgery for my right eye and this draft sketch was what I had been rushing for the past few nights. It is going to be a one metre long artwork to put all the significant buildings owned by one of the big developers in Singapore. It is not difficult to begin with since they own most of the buildings along the Fullerton Heritage Waterfront. However, it was more difficult than I originally thought as it progressed. I will need to research into the building heights and sizes when I put them together. As an architect by profession, it has its advantage. I will post the final artwork when it is done.

Another Physio Therapy Session

180821_Physio
Another physio session for my left knee, most of the patients were referred by the army so some of them came in their military uniforms or army T shirts. Again, everyone was glued to their smart phones.

A sketch at the clinic

180820_eyedoctor
Pre-consultation session at Dr Jerry Tan's clinic, the eye doctor before my cataract removal surgery in another 4 days. This Indonesia lady was glued to her smart phone while most of the patients were just sitting there waiting. She moved to another waiting area when her husband called her and just as I finished sketching her in brief outline, you really need an exit plan when sketching people, cars or animals, they move!

Sushi Chefs

180816_sushi
I don't think so much of lunch place when I am working especially on the last day of an intensive 3-day course. Sushi Express at Tampines One has all the favourite food that I need on any work day. However, I think it is the freedom of picking up any plate on the belt in front of you that makes it an unique dinning experience. I also like to watch so many sushi chefs in action so I can sketch them after my meal. It will be a bonus if I can have a cup of Kopi O at Toast Box after lunch but the queue is always very long that I give up.

August Sketchwalk at Kampong Java Park

Credits: sketch by Debbie Teo

What do we do with disappearing spaces? We go sketch them!

Kampong Java Park is an enclave flanked by the CTE, Bukit Timah Road, and KK Women's and Children's hospital. Opened in 1973, it will be closed permanently from Aug 28 this year to make way for the construction of the future North-South Corridor tunnel. It is a haven of green which has given respite to patients and visitors alike with its large trees and lily-covered pond. Join us to say goodbye.

Kuriya Japanese Restaurant

180815_Kuriya
I was desperately trying to get out of office after intense training at work. We are preparing for the new teaching materials for the new subject in the new semester in mid-October. I like to have a bowl of hot soup for lunch so I headed to Kuriya at Tampines One for their Ramen. A quick sketch after my meal.

I am sketching Tampines Town for a project and it was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience to sketch these three different locations in Tampines on three separate days.

The Watermelon playground situated behind Blk 858 of Tampines Avenue 5 is one of the second generation of old playgrounds designed by Housing and Development Board in the shape of tropical fruits.

Second sketch is the Tampines Round Market at 137 Tampines Street 11. In the photo on the left, these two nice and talented helpers are from the Philippines and Vietnam I met at the shop opposite the market. Both speak Mandarin (with Malaysian slang), Singlish, a little Malay and even Hokkien to the uncles that walk past. Impressive!

The last sketch is Tampines Central seen from the comfortable interior at Kopitiam at Tampines One around 5:30pm during the golden hour.

3-day Course at Work

180814_TemasekPoly
I was attending a 3-day course on 14, 15 & 16 Aug at work to prepare for the new semester. Here is a sketch when the Director was speaking to the team. The ink was not flowing smoothly then I realised it was Hero fountain pen model 7032. Not as great as my favourite model 9018.

Hyderabad Road

180804_SPJain

Another Singapore Land Authority Secret location. This is SP Jain School of Global Management at 10, Hyderabad Road. A heritage site and it used to be the Dental Institute in a lush environment. Before that, it was the Alexandra Barracks. The probable origins of the road’s name would be the Russell’s Infantry’s 95th Battalion, who were stationed at Alexandra Barracks from 1905 to 1908. The British Indian Army unit traced its origins to one of two Russell Brigade regiments raised in 1813 by Sir Henry Russell – the British Resident of Hyderabad for the Nizam of Hyderabad’s Army. Besides Hyderabad Road, a Russells Road can also be found in the area – all of which was once part of Alexandra Barracks.

I did a very long piece. Too ambitious on site and talked too much to friends in the next group touring the place, so after one and a half hour, I only managed to complete the outline in ink and added the shadows on location. Details especially the trees were added at home.

Itacho at Bedok Mall

I was hungry so I drove to Bedok Mall to find food. Guess I just love Japanese sashimi and sushi too much that I ended sketching the sushi chef again at Itacho.

Toa Payoh - a matured estate

180731_ToaPayoh

A sketch after lunch at Toa Payoh which is a matured public housing estate. Block 127 is a popular wet market and hawker stalls that is closed in the afternoon. I used to work at HDB and we often discussed about public housing policies. You seldom find new wet markets and hawker centers in the new public housing estates after the 1990s. They are now replaced with either NTUC supermarkets or private run supermarkets and food courts.

Personally I love the design of the public housing flats in this area of Toa Payoh with its orange and white colours and art-deco features.
