Day two in Barcelon, Miguel, Cesar and Isabel brought us to this nice restaurant for lunch after sketching Gaudi's Casa Mila and Casa Batllo. This is the third sketch in my pocket Muji Sketchbook. I will upload my loose pieces on later.

Barcelona - Day 1

130706_Barcelona2
First and second pages in Muji Sketchbook on Barcelona when we arrived on 6 July. The weather was so hot that I was not in the mood of doing larger loose pieces. I rather sketched with my pocket 130x130mm Muji Sketchbook over a glass of ice tea.

Bishan Park

130829_BishanPk
Paul and I conducted a workshop for the Geography teachers at Bishan Park and before the teachers arrived at the park by chartered bus, I did a sketch sitting comfortably at McDonald located inside the Park. The ponds and bridges, colourful shrubs and lush greenery, make this 62 hectare park one of the largest and most popular parks in Singapore.

A Rare Night Sketchwalk

Epigram Books is now working on the next title of the "Our Neighbourhoods" series, "We ♥ Katong"!

This is the second session, and it'll be at night to capture the "dark side" of Joo Chiat and Katong.

START POINT:
06:30 pm
The Betel Box
200 Joo Chiat Road
We will meet in the common area UPSTAIRS. Ring the doorbell to alert the receptionist and they will open the GREEN DOOR for you. Then go up!

END POINT:
09:30 pm
The Betel Box
We will meet in the common area again for show-and-tell / debrief. There is a pool table on which we can display our sketches.

Aditi from Epigram Books has prepared a map (25 copies) and a listing of locations of note (25 copies). Do print your own or download them to your portable device if you prefer.

1: Locations list: http://tinyurl.com/katongnightwalk
2: Map of Katong: http://tinyurl.com/katongmap
*being such a huge area, the map is a little hard to read
3: Katong DIGITAL MAP: http://goo.gl/maps/m9Gq2
4: URA Heritage Trail: http://www.singaporecitygallery.sg/images/wmKatong-Book.pdf

While the focus will be on the highlighted places, you are free to sketch whatever you want. Do chat to residents, business operators and people you meet to get a better feel of the location and find out what they find important and beautiful in the area.

Joo Chiat

130817_JooChiat
Joo Chiat is as lively as I remember. I was also surprise to find this corner shop at the junction of Joo Chiat Road and Ceylon Lane. The shop is occupied by a Chinese paper shop that dedicated to the dead. They make human height paper houses, big cars and household objects offered to the ancestors. I also wonder with the fast changing life style and rapid modernization, how long can this kind of shop devoted to traditional practices stay in Joo Chiat?

Madrid

130720_Madrid_pano
I finally find time to scan the sketches of my Spain trip in July. We only have two days in Madrid. We arrived in Madrid via express train from Sevilla and it took only two and a half hour. A week later, a train from the same company Refen derailed due to high speed at a curve bend and it took 78 lives and many more injuries towards Santiago, another city in the northe west of Spain. It did send a chill to my spine for a short while when I heard the news.

Madrid's weather was hot hot hot felt like 38 to 40 deg C. I was totally unproductive under this kind of weather condition even I came from the hot and humid Singapore. The weather was so hot and dry that I develop heat rashes after Granada.

We planned to stay indoor in the afternoon so visits to musuems seemed to be the right thing to do. We visited Muse del Prado the moment we arrived at the hotel with Rafael, a Spainish sketcher we met in Singapore. It was a blessing to have Rafael traveled with us in Madrid due to the language barrier. He was a very good art guide for all the works display in the Prado Museum.

We also visited Centre de Arte Beina Sofia which housed the contemporary works including the largest Dali show in the world. The tickets were sold out for Dali show so we could only be contended with the permanents exhibits, a futuristic lovely cafe, the standard museum store and a chic cosy bookstore when I bought the last A6 Moleskine Japanese Sketchbook.

It is the largest Gothic cathedral and the third-largest church in the world. It was registered in 1987 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The cathedral is also the burial site of Christopher Columbus.
The statue of the Giraldillo seen here is located at the south door of the Cathedral. The original statue is found on top of the tower of the cathedral. The statue "el Giraldillo", representing The Faith.
