120923_JalanTuaKong

Another breakfast sketch at corner coffee shop at Jalan Tua Kong and East Coast Road. It is certainly not a good idea to draw too many lines on the face. It means too much wrinkles on my husband's face and making him a bit too old in this sketch. He did not know anyway as he was enjoying his meal.

porridge

120922_marineparade
The eating house that we frequent a lot. As far as i can remember , this is the third sketch at the same place, Hua Hua Eating House at Marine Parade at different year, different time in my muji sketchbooks. We never fail to order two bowls of porridge, a plate of raw fish plus coffee and tea for our breakfast. Here my husband was busy making calls to settle some office issues at breakfast on a Saturday morning.

EAT, another food place

120525_EAT
lunch at EAT., where they serve local noodles called Mee Pok at affordable price scattered at shopping malls in a set with a cup of coffee or tea. Cheap and good food at S$4.00 per set with a bowl of noodles and a cup of coffee.

hokkien mee

120308_geylang
This corner coffee shop at Lorong 29, Geylang has the best hokkien mee or noodles in my view. The noodles are fried on a big wok over charcoal which is quite rare in modern Singapore. The satays sold at this coffee shop are very good too. The only problem is that it is very hard to find a parking lot in this area. The big man on the left had a very strange and unique haircut.

936 Food Village at Siglap

120225_foodvillage

This is the first sketch at the coffee shop next to Siglap NTUC. It is called 936 Food Village. Once again, there was a big turnout for the sketchwalk although the weather was hot and humid. This coffee shop has changed operators for many time. It seems to be doing very well now after the renovation to give it a fresh and modern look.

bedok at night

111130_bedok

At this coffee shop opposite Temasek Junior College in Bedok, men were seen drinking beer in bottles kept chilled in a big tub. Young and sexy Chinese girls would go around to serve and pour the beer for the customers who were mainly middle age Singaporean men. Beside drinking, most of them were watching TV provided by the coffee shop owner and some were seen reading the evening Chinese newspaper. This lady in my sketch appeared to be so bored while the husband was drinking his beer and reading the papers.

salty dishes

111127_dinner

That's a quick sketch of my husband at a family dinner. We were having the fish soup steamboat and the crab vermicili at the coffee shop next to Siglap Centre. Both dishes were so salty! We will probably not visit the stall for a very long time to come.

lunch at waterloo street

111116_waterloo
111116_waterloo_photo1 111116_waterloo_photo2

I had lunch at my favourite chicken rice stall at Waterloo Street on my off day. I was surprised there was no queue but as I finished the plate of chicken rice and a cup of coffee, the lunch crowd started to build up. People were standing next to me but I did not know whether they were looking at my sketch or they were waiting for me to leave so they could take over my seat at this busy lunch hour.

my favourite noodle shop

At Simpang Bedok with my favourite bowl of Meepok - a flat noodle. It was raining heavily so I stayed for a while and did a sketch.

old charm coffee shop

111014_JinWee

111014_Jin Wee Coffee Shop_photo I feel very comfortable at this over 30years old Jin Wee Coffee Shop at Siglap because we can speak Hainanese, our dialect to the shop helpers. We particular like their fish head steam boat which we never failed to order at our recent visits. While steam boat is powered by electricity nowadays, this shop is still using the traditional charcoal to heat up the broth. Yummy!

Prawn Noodles at Thomson Road

110811_PrawnMee
IMG_7640I took a half day leave in the afternoon and drove to Thomson Road for my lunch. I saw this crowded coffee shop just opposite Novena Catholic Church so I decided to check it out. From the newspaper clippings on the wall, I realised that this coffee shop was hailed as having the legendary prawn noodle from Whitley Road! So I ordered a bowl of dry noodles with medium size prawn and a cup of coffee. The verdict : I like it very much especially the soup.

This sketch is also the last page of the Muji Sketchbook size: 130 x 130mm.

chicken rice

110706_fivestar

On my way home, I like to stop at Five Star Chicken Hainanese Chicken Rice at 191 East Coast Road for my late dinner. How do I know the house number? As I sketched the shop, it was revealed on the shop front in my drawing! Coffee splashes done with the coffee from the shop.

Again, when we sketch, we exercise our observation skills!

at the coffee shop

110409_coffeeshop

110409_coffeeshop_photo
A sketch after my favourite porridge at this Marine Parade coffee shop. It was crowded with senior citizens and middle-aged couples. I was telling my husband : "Our younger generations are still in bed on a lazy Saturday morning just like our children."

result of sketchwalk at Keong Siak Road - part 1

110129_photo110129_keongsiak2

Last week sketchwalk at Keong Siak Road was a blast. We had about 35 people at the end of the session. Some of them left half way so we could even have more sketchers.

This piece done at the junction of Keong Siak Road and Teck Lim Road was the first time I used portrait format for size 200 x 400mm, ink and watercolour. I used this to illustrate to young sketchers that we need to have an exit plan for location drawing. For this piece, there was no time for colouring so I did the outline first. I spent more time on the other landscape format piece entirely done on location. It was already on my facebook but I will post them later.

steamboat dinner for a cold night

101229_dinner

I was too busy to scan my sketches until last night and I uploaded them to my flickr site. Within the short period of time, a few viewers noticed "the details right down to her crack". Oh, it certainly was a very fun sketch to do. I also want to say that this coffee shop at Siglap is famous for their fish steamboat which was perfect for a cold night.

senior citizen at the food court

101110_MarineParade

This senior couple were so popular not just with the people working at the coffee shop at Marine Parade but also with the passers-by who would greet them politely. The old lady in her long pajamas was talking while the old man would smile and nod his head in agreement. From her accent, they were Chinese from Northern China. Lovely couple.

trying new tools

101009_Macpherson

I bought two new pens - black and dark brown Aqua Brush Duo by LYRA. This was drawn with the brown Aqua Brush. Not waterproof but I managed to add a layer of wash over.

trying new tools

100925_RubyLane

Last Saturday was a productive day for me. I did three pieces of sketches in the morning during sketchwalk at Eunos and in the afternoon, I did another one while waiting for my son's Akido class to end. I sat at a corner coffee shop at Ruby Lane enjoying the thick black coffee. I started with ZIG's grey watercolour brushpen but found the lines were too light to my liking. So I traced the lines over with my usual fountain pen in Noodler's Peranankan Brown ink. I believe the standard name is Polar Brown. I coloured the sky in ZIG's light blue watercolour brushpen and added the roof tiles and sign in watercolour.

I was quite pleased with the outcome.

another sketch after dinner

100517_food
I realise I have not posted this sketch. It was pouring like cats and dogs so I stayed after dinner at this eating house. I sketched with my new acquired Noodler's Peranakan Brown ink made exclusively for our local market.
