July Sketchwalk at Telok Ayer Street

This Saturday we'll be at Telok Ayer Street and the adjacent Amoy, Stanley and Boon Tat streets.

Sanwiched between Ann Sinag Hill and the skyscraping towers of Shenton Way, the area has two of the oldest places of worship in the city— Thian Hock Keng temple and Masjid Al-Abrar—along with many conserved shophouses and buildings, like Nagore Dargah.

We will start and end at Telok Ayer Green, a little pocket of coolness in the middle of the precinct. See you there!

Lau Pa Sat

120307_Lau Pa Sat
Lau Pa Sat means old market in hokkien dialect. This was drawn at night, we were having satay, crab, sotong, stingray and beer in the outdoor dinning area.

link from Wikipedia about Lau Pat Sat on the history of the building here.

Lau Par Sat was gazetted as a national monument in July 1973. It is a big food court managed by Kopitiam since 1995.

heavy rain

111112_AngSiangHill

At Saturday ad-hoc Sketchwalk. I did three sketches with two under the heavy rain at second location. This was done at the first location at Ann Siang Hill just outside URA building. Ann Siang Hill is characterised by the old clans buildings at both sides of the road.

At second location. Started a sketch at Boon Tat Street and it began to rain like cats and dogs. Got to find the shelter along the narrow five foot way on the left of this location.

My third sketch at the junction of Amoy Street and Boon Tat Street. Some of us took shelter at the narrow five-foot way along Amoy Street looking at Boon Tat Street. I was sitting near to the umbrella you see here before the rain started. Finally a group picture for the great turn out. The heavy rain did not deter the spirit and we had a great time sketching together!

Thian Hock Keng Temple at Telok Ayer Street. I brought about 20 students on the last sketch walk with USK-SG members. We had a huge turn out at about 50 people for the sketch walk. It was a blast! I Walked around giving pointers/tips to the students. Managed to complete one piece. 200X400mm, ink, coffee and watercolours.

Sketchwalk 27 Nov, Saturday 9.00am

You are invited to join us for our upcoming sketchwalk happening this saturday, 27th Nov. We will be meeting at the Amoy Street Food Centre's POSB ATM at 9am, you may have your breakfast there and then spread out in any direction around the Telok Ayer Street area to draw. Interesting points to cover would be the Tian Hock Keng temple, an Indian Shrine, rag & bone men and women, and there is also the business district just a short walk away. At 12pm, we will all meet again at Amoy Street Food centre where we will have lunch and do our "show and tell." Tia mentions that the lor mee on the 2nd storey is really yummy and so is the XO fish soup on the ground floor.

To get to the Amoy Street Food Centre, please drop at Tanjong Pagar MRT (exit G) and walk over (See map)
For more information, please call Andrew at 91070735 or Tia at 96968080. No sign-ups necessary. See you there!
